A delegation from Spain and Portugal, led by the presidents of the two countries' Football Associations Angel Maria Villar and Gilberto Madail, travelled to the Home of FIFA in Zurich on Tuesday 20 October 2009 for discussions with FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter and FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke.
Among the topics was the joint bid of the two nations to host the FIFA World Cup™ in 2018 and/or 2022, bringing the total number of bids for the two tournaments to ten. As well Portugal and Spain, the following associations have also confirmed their interest in hosting FIFA's showpiece competition: Australia, Belgium and the Netherlands, England, Indonesia, Japan, Korea Republic, Qatar, Russia and the USA.
"It's an honour that the [FA] presidents of these two great footballing nations have made their way to the Home of FIFA in person to present their bids to host the event. All the candidates have shown a great deal of interest in our most prestigious competition, the FIFA World Cup, a global event with worldwide coverage," said the FIFA President.
