Sports in Qatar ... Host by Excellence

Football is by far Qatar’s most popular sport

In Qatar, we love both playing and watching sports.

Football is by far Qatar’s most popular sport, but tennis, cricket, golf, athletics, water-skiing, diving, sailing, jet-skiing, drag-racing, rally-driving, horse riding and even camel racing are just some of the other sports played and watched regularly

Our reputation started to grow when tennis stars such as Boris Becker and Goran Ivanisevic competed at the 1993 Qatar Open tennis tournament.

Qatar hosted a successful FIFA World Youth Championship in 1995. The event was organised in record time following the withdrawal of the original hosts. Three venues in Doha hosted 32 games, contested by 16 teams.

Qatar is already known for hosting a number of fantastic international sporting events on a regular basis, including the IAAF Qatar Athletic Super Gand Prix, Qatar Moto GP, Qatar Masters golf tournament and the WTA Qatar Total Open tennis tournament. In 2008, the season-ending Sony Ericsson WTA Championships were held in Doha for the first time – and they will continue to be hosted by the Qatari capital for the coming two years. In March 2010, Qatar hosted the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Athletics.
