
One of Qatar's seven municipalities is Doha. With a population of 796,947, it is the municipality with the largest population. It is the local government of Doha, the capital of Qatar. Its area is 234.8 km2.
The Arabic word "dohat," which means "roundness," is where the name "Doha" first appeared. The rounded bays that surround the region's coastline are the source of its name.
In 1963, the Municipality of Qatar was established, making it the first municipality ever. The name was changed to Municipality of Ad Dawhah after that year.
The island of Halul and the exclave of Doha Industrial Area, both located 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Doha, are included in the city limits.
Al Wakrah municipality to the south, Al Rayyan municipality to the west, Al Daayen municipality to the north, and Umm Salal municipality to the northwest all border the Doha municipality, which is located in the middle east of Qatar.
Over 80% of Qatar's population lives in the Doha Metropolitan Area, which contains most of the country's governmental, financial, and residential hubs.
Districts like Al Dafna and West Bay are located in the center of Doha, the municipality's easternmost region, which serves as the country's administrative and financial center. Additionally, this region is home to important infrastructure, including Hamad Medical City and Hamad International Airport.
