About Qatar: Umm Salal

Umm Salal Map

Umm Salal is a town in the state of Qatar.

It features various historic sites, including Barzan Tower. Umm Salal's municipal headquarters are at Umm Salal Ali, about 10 kilometres from the seashore and 15 kilometres north of Doha, Qatar's capital.

Umm Salal's first word is Arabic for "mother," and salal refers to huge rocks or stones. As a result, the term "mother of rocks" translates literally. The area's various rock formations inspired the name.

Umm Salal was created as a municipality in 1972, along with Qatar's other four founding municipalities. The municipal headquarters were inaugurated on November 29, 1974, under the supervision of Mohammad bin Jaber Al Thani, a former minister of municipality and urban planning, and Abdulaziz Al-Ghanem, Umm Salal's municipal council delegate.

The first head of the city council was Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Thani.

Doha borders Umm Salal to the southeast, Al Rayyan to the south and west, Al Khor to the north, and Al Daayen to the east. It is devoid of a shoreline. The municipality is quite tiny in size, occupying only 2.7% of Qatar's area. Its scenery is filled with wide spaces and rock formations.

Because of the presence of a major aquifer, the northern half of the municipality is primarily agricultural, and it is home to a number of small communities and farms. The biggest urban settlement in the north is Saina Al-Humaidi, which is located 5 kilometres north of Umm Salal Ali. In recent years, government land allocations have increased the boundaries of Saina Al-Humaidi, which is being developed as a centre for housing for the surrounding rural settlements.

Umm Salal Mohammed is part of Metropolitan Doha in the municipality's southern half. Umm Salal Ali, somewhat to the north, is likewise regarded as being within Metropolitan Doha's limits, albeit to a considerably lesser extent. These two communities have contributed significantly to the municipality's southern expansion.

The course of the national utility corridor separates Umm Salal's eastern and western portions. The desert dominates the western part, where there are few towns. The eastern part is densely populated and close to Al Shamal Road.

There are 21 rawdas, 10 wadis, 20 jeris (places where water flows), and three hills in the municipality.

Umm Salal has a population of 60,509 people and a land area of 317.9 square kilometres, according to the 2010 census.
